Responding to the reality that data touches nearly every academic field, Lafayette offers a data science minor, with a focus on what data analysis means on a liberal arts campus.

The minor provides students with a basic understanding of the subject along with some foundational skills. It differs from many data science programs in that it integrates these outcomes with core liberal arts objectives, which are met by six course requirements in applied statistics and computation.

The data science minor includes key components on the ethics of gathering and using data and the visualization of data, and involves faculty from computer science, mathematics, economics, philosophy, and biology.

Students are engaged in classroom conversations about how data is used and can be manipulated unintentionally or for strategic or even nefarious purposes, while discussions around visualization will involve how data is presented.
